Societies that had not reregistered under the Incorporated Societies Act 2022 when the transition window closed on 5 April 2026 were removed from the register the next day. Frozen bank accounts, lapsed insurance and personal liability for committee members all follow from that one date.
Sourced from the New Zealand Companies Office incorporated societies register, enumerated A–Z. The register's own per-prefix totals came to 2,031 removed societies and this index holds 1,902 of them (94%), so treat these counts as a floor. Societies recorded as Dissolved are a separate cohort and are not included.
Incorporation is what makes a society a legal person separate from its members. Remove it and this is what follows.
Accounts held in the society name can be locked once the bank sees the removal. Subscriptions and grant payments bounce.
Gaming trusts and grant funders require current registration. Money already granted can be clawed back.
Land, buildings and gear owned by the society can pass to the Crown, because there is no longer an owner.
Public liability names an insured entity. If that entity no longer exists, a claim can be declined.
Officers can become personally liable for obligations the society takes on after removal.
Leases, venue hire and supplier agreements cannot be entered into in the society name.
